There is not a day that goes by that you can’t look at your phone, tablet, computer or television without peering into someone’s life. The things that we see or that people show us through social media gives us a glimpse into their lives, travels, families, likes, dislikes, etc… When you see this do you start regretting the choices you’ve made in your life? It talks about how we are programmed to only project the “best version” of ourselves to others, for them to see what we want them to see about how we live. As you know the fatal flaw in this, is that humans are much more than a snap shot or a 15 second video.
Your Perception vs The Reality
By falling into the trap of believing everything we see on social media and how people portray their lives, it can cause us to get down on our own lives. We can start developing a negative view of our life, believing that we should be in a different place in our life. Our perception can get so distorted that it may cause us to feel depressed, forgetting that humans naturally have both highs and lows in our life that come in waves. Some times when we feel the most self-pity we may find ourselves over indulging in other peoples lives, but that can keep us spiraling into negative feels. So what needs to change about our perception to keep us feeling that way? We have to realize that we have the opportunity to change the narrative of our lives and if we are unhappy with how things are going, we should take imperfect action to try to start to build the kind of life we want to lead. Chasing false perceptions of other people could be a rabbit hole that is difficult for us to climb out of because we can lose ourselves in the dark winding recesses of what we believe is the truth about other peoples lives and what we fail to see in our own lives. It’s often that we don’t see what is good in our lives or show that we truly value what we have until we lose it or until someone points it out to us. The ability to take time out everyday to appreciate your life and focus on your goals will help you keep a proper perspective of not just where you are but where you can go. Try not to blend others perceptions with your reality because then you can get lost. Create your own reality by working on your life plan and staying positive about your future. The key is to purge negative mindsets and negative people out of your life because what’s left over is the byproduct of what you’ve created for yourself. Your reality!
How to work on your reality
One of the easiest ways to work on your personal reality is to unplug from technology every so often. Take a break from peering into people’s lives and focus on some of your personal task that you’ve set out for yourself to accomplish. I am a big believer in starting your day by visualizing what you want to get accomplished and what you have to do to move towards your goals. Secondly, create a mental anchor that brings you back to your goals. So if you see someone that is going some where you want to visit, or is buying something you would like to own, or someone who met a weight loss goal that you have, tell yourself to refocus on your goals and make sure you are doing something every day to work towards accomplishing it. The wonderful thing about crafting your reality is that you can start at any time, there is no magic starting point, you don’t get too old to do it. Your reality is everything you do, say, eat, visit, who your friends are and how you think. So, you see, the key to crafting your reality rest entirely with you and no one else. You can base your reality on others because very simply, you haven’t done what they’ve done to get there. You have to put in your own work and be unafraid to move mountains to shape your future, if that’s what your life plan calls for. You should ask yourself, what do I want out of my life? Am I doing everything in my power to live the life I want? Does my life plan clearly show a strategy on how I can get there in 3, 6, or 10 years? Does my support system validate my goals and encourage me to work towards them? Working on how you want your life to shape up starts today, everything you do and think every minute and hour of the day will reflect what you become later. Make your time count!
Do other peoples perceptions matter?
The answer to that question is, it depends. People tend to craft their thoughts on you based on how they believe your life should go, usually not based on tangible fact. In fact a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson says: “people only see what they are prepared to see”, so that means that based on what’s going on in their lives, is how they will see your life. Unless you are looking for feedback to improve your reality then how people perceive you shouldn’t affect how you plan and go after your life. Always maintain your goals and only use the barometer you’ve created for you life gauge how you think your life is going.
