If you only had one opportunity

Life is full of chances and opportunities.  The things that separate people who are ready to take the next step towards their goals is preparedness.  We don’t always know when our opportunity will come in life or if it will come, however part of creating a life plan is about already having your ducks in a row so you can capitalize on anything that comes your way.  The visionaries and leaders in the business world and the giants that built many of the bedrocks of industry have captialized on the opportunities that were given to them.  The sad reality of life is that many people and I dare to say most don’t take advantage of the opportunities that they are given.  Some simply don’t recognize when it’s in front of them, others don’t feel adequate enough to push through the cracked door.  Opportunity like life doesn’t always align with the stars, sometimes the opportunity is more narrow and requires more effort but it’s still there for the taking.  The question is, what will you do if given the chance to fulfill one of your life’s dreams?  Will you seize the day or will you pass it off to the next person who was ready for it?

HOW TO RECOGNIZE AN OPPORTUNITY THAT’S OPEN TO YOU

We must open the doors of opportunity. But we must also equip our people to walk through those doors. – Lyndon B. Johnson

Being ill equipped to take advantage of an opportunity has killed many people’s dreams in their tracks.  Recognizing an opportunity to take advantage of, is almost as important as preparing for it, but how can you recognize an opportunity if it comes along?  The first and foremost requirement to seeing an opportunity is to know what your goals are and where you want to be in 5, 10 years.  You have to first know yourself and what you want out of life in order to recognize when there is a chance for you to take a step forward towards that future.  You have to do some serious self scouting to figure out what you want and how you plan to get it.

Another aspect of recognizing an opportunity is working tirelessly towards your goal, being surrounded day in and day out by people who support your vision and who contribute to your future plans.  Sharing your future vision with others will help them to recognize when there may be an appropriate opportunity for you if they come across it themselves.  It takes a true support system to push us where we want to go and to help keep us there.  The more eyes you have out on the world recognizing opportunities for you the more likely you are to come across them.

You also have to speak explicitly and be able to articulate what opportunities you are looking for.  Without a clear, direct objective you are less likely to find opportunities that truly fit your long term vision and you run the risk of settling for anything that comes your way.

WHAT IS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY?

I should warn you that all opportunities are not created equal, there are both good and bad opportunities.  The good opportunities give you a chance to line up your vision for the future right beside it and envision a path to successfully achieving your goals.  If the opportunity doesn’t line up with your plan and your future goals then you may be barking up the wrong tree.  More importantly you may be missing the fact that at the present time your best opportunity dwells with where you currently are until such a time comes that you can create something better for yourself.  So many people jump ship on a good situation just because they feel like they need to be moving.  Sometimes the best move is no move at all, remember that not moving is still a decisive action and it can save time, money, patience and heart ache.  A good opportunity puts you in a better situation not just short term but long term.  A good opportunity enhances your skill set and improves your life as opposed to completely sucking the life out of you.

The reason a lot of people do not recognize opportunity is because it usually goes around wearing overalls looking like hard work. – Thomas Edison

Don’t be one of those people who miss out on an opportunity because of indifference or laziness.  Wake up every day with a passion to work full on towards your goals and kick that door of opportunity open if you have to.

Here’s to your success,
