The one key to unlocking success

There are two ways to wake up in the morning.  You can wake up with a knot in your stomach, regretting the challenges that lay ahead or you can wake up with the mindset that you are going to make a difference in your life or someone else’s.  I’ve noticed over the years when I’ve spoken to people who had a track record of negative things happen in their lives, a common thought process.  The thought that the things that happen to them are someone else’s fault: “it was the other persons decision”, or “she said something that got me into a negative mindset”, or “I got a flat tire”.  Whatever the problem is, they blame outwardly and never look at how they’ve contributed to the problem.  The people over the years who I’ve met who have been most successful, have always looked everyday at how they can make a better version of themselves.  When things happen to them, the accept the failure and make plans to succeed.  There is no coincidence that they are typically harder workers.  That’s not to say that people who can be negative minded are not hard workers, but people who are the most success work harder on things that matter the most to their future success.  The “one key” to unlocking success? Working hard everyday on the right things.  It all starts with your mindset.  If you tend to blame outwardly instead of accepting a failure and focusing on making a better way than you are working harder in the wrong direction.  Being successful starts with knowing that everyday you wake up it’s another chance for you to make a difference and take a step forward towards your goals.  You have to craft your positive environment before you can exist in one, the same way you have to build a house before you live in one.  If you want to be the best version of yourself, create the work ethic and mental strength of that person from the time your feet hit the floor.

We know that this time of year many of you have questions about how to stay fit and improve your body.  Knowledge is truly the best way to combat some of the myths that are out there about how to stay in shape and avoid falling in the trap of drinking magic potions and special blends that claim all you have to do is ingest them and no exercise and you will lose weight.  It is clear that most Americans still need to make lifestyle adjustments but continue to be mislead by “snake oil” salesman who would rather profit off of people who don’t know what they’re doing and how to do it.

You even have to be careful of what you search for on the internet, not just trusting anything you hear about dieting and exercising.  In order to combat some of the myths that exist I have started a series called “Trainer Talk”, where you can submit questions to real Trainers who have experience working with clients that perhaps have some of the same legitimate questions as you. ——-Watch Video Here

When I’ve interviewed Personal Trainers in the past and asked them why they chose to become Personal Trainers, almost all of them said because they wanted to “make a difference” in clients lives.  That is what we strive to do with Trainer Talk — Watch Video Here—, is to make a difference in lives of people who do not know better and are trying to improve their lives.

Fasting vs Calorie Restricted Diets

Having been a Fitness Professional for 14 years I have seen many different forms of diet iterations.  Whenever I have had time to try them I have just for a little while to use myself as a case study for clients who would inquire.  What I found out was very interesting when I tried both a Calorie restricting plan (reducing your total daily calories or any combo of days with restricted caloric intake) and intermittent fasting (taking a break from eating altogether for 24 hours once or twice a week).  Here’s what I found for both of these plans:

CALORIE RESTRICTED DIETING

THE BAD

  • I had less energy on a daily basis
  • I felt workouts were less productive and I lost anaerobic strength
  • I was in a state of constant hunger
  • I felt fuzzy and light headed at times

THE GOOD

  • I could plan my meals and even though food portions were smaller or lower in calories I was able to eat
  • I lost body weight

INTERMITTENT FASTING 

The concept of not eating at all or taking in any calories, goes against most philosophies that have been preached over the years by nutritionist and Personal Trainers, however there can be some real benefits of fasting:

THE BAD

  • The first couple of times you fast you have the obvious signs of hunger, lightheaded, hungry, however I did not experience tremendous energy deficits
  • You can’t intake any calories only water or calorie free drinks

THE GOOD

  • I actually got better workouts, my strength went up
  • Although my weight went down, it was primarily a change in body fat
  • HGH in your body spikes in the final hours of fasting which helps your workout gains
  • After the first week I fasted I got used to not eating the days I fasted and it wasn’t so bad especially on the busy work days
  • Don’t have to worry about what to eat since your fasting

These are just my takes on the difference between the two dieting protocols.  I preferred intermittent fasting (fit my schedule more), yielded more results and felt great.  Intermittent fasting isn’t great for everyone and of course you should consult a doctor before your begin any diet or program.  So if your the kind of person who needs to constantly eat then calorie restriction would be better, however if you are busy and have will power than intermittent fasting is for you.

What do you see when you look in the mirror?

What are some of the adjectives you use to describe yourself? tall, short, light skinned, dark skinned, happy, dumpy lean.  Do you use the right adjectives to describe yourself? like powerful, confident, successful, kind, giving or worthy? Well you should, by changing your own personal narrative you can change your outcome on most of the activities you engage in.  In a recent Forbes Article  it mentions “what you put your attention on, amplifies your reality”.  So if you call yourself stupid, fat, idiot, dummy, things like this, then that becomes your reality.  So then how do you change your reality into what you want, change your narrative.  Say to yourself today is going to be a good day because “I am the best version of myself”.  If you are going for a job interview, tell yourself: “I am the best candidate for this job”. If you are looking to change your body to get in better shape tell yourself “I deserve to look better and be better”.  Only by changing how you see yourself in the mirror will you change your reality.
