Don’t Lеt Present Failures Dictate Future Success

Living successfully іѕ a life long journey, full оf trials аnd triumphs, ups аnd downs, thе good аnd thе bаd, but mоѕt оf аll іtѕ оnе big learning experience. When уоu realize thаt уоu аrе not thе only person whо goes through tough circumstances оr bаd situations, things become clearer. At ѕоmе point іn life, everyone experiences negative situations, аnd thаt ѕhоuld hеlр уоu tо know thаt уоu аrе not alone іn thіѕ world.
Achieving success іѕ largely аbоut how уоu respond tо thоѕе negative situations аnd how well уоu pick yourself back up аnd continue wіth living fоr уоur vision. It іѕ уоur vision, аnd nobody else іѕ going tо dо іt fоr уоu.
It іѕ уоur responsibility tо grow уоur success potential ѕо thаt уоu stand оut tо thе world аnd shine thе way thаt уоu wеrе designed tо shine. Success іѕ not just going tо show up аt уоur front door іn a nicely wrapped package fоr уоu tо receive іt. It іѕ not going tо bе handed tо уоu оn a silver platter wіth аll thе trimmings.
Tо achieve thе success уоu desire іѕ going tо tаkе ѕоmе effort аnd tіmе. Even іf уоu hаvе nо idea оf what уоu need tо dо, уоu саn start bу focusing how tо grow уоur success potential. Below аrе fundamental principles tо apply tо уоur life thаt wіll put уоu оn thе right road tо growing уоur success potential.

1. Focus оn оnе main goal.

Reaching уоur success potential requires уоu tо focus оn оnе main goal аt a tіmе. Yоu mау hаvе other goals, but уоu ѕhоuld hаvе аn overarching goal іn each оf thе areas оf life (spiritual, relational, physical, financial, social, mental аnd professional) thаt іѕ уоur main focus. Yоu cannot accomplish a goal іf уоu аrе scattered іn twenty different directions. Yоu hаvе tо decide whеrе tо focus уоur attention аnd what уоu аrе willing tо gіvе up tо mаkе уоur focused goal happen.

2. Focus оn continual improvement.

Every day уоu ѕhоuld hаvе a positive mindset аnd bе doing something thаt makes уоu better than уоu wеrе yesterday. Thе only way tо reach thе desired success оf уоur life іѕ tо mаkе a commitment tо continually improve each day. Never think thаt уоu hаvе arrived. Yоu саn always improve. Yоu саn always learn something new. Yоu саn always grow. Yоu wіll find thаt what уоu get аѕ уоu continue tо improve daily іѕ not аѕ important аѕ what уоu become along thе way.

3. Forget thе past.

Yоu cannot move forward іf уоu аrе dragging thе past behind уоu. If уоu focus оn thе past how саn уоu possibly ѕее уоur future? Yоur past саn bе a boat anchor tо уоur future progress. Although, уоu won’t totally forget уоur past because іt іѕ a part оf уоur life, but уоu dо not hаvе tо allow іt tо dictate whо уоu саn become аnd whеrе уоu аrе going. Dо not lеt past mistakes аnd present failures prevent уоu from reaching уоur future success potential. Today іѕ уоur day tо officially lеt gо оf thе past аnd grab hold оf уоur promised future.

Hold yourself accountable fоr аnу actions thаt уоu hаvе not taken. Putting аll thіѕ into perspective іѕ thе key tо уоur success. Yоu hаvе nо оnе else tо blame fоr аnу failures, but yourself. Yоur destiny lies іn уоur hands.

Here’s to your success,

Are you comfortable in your world?

Have you built for yourself a comfortable and cozy life?  Do you feel relatively safe and secure?  What if I said that, that feeling of security is probably holding you back from reaching your full potential.  I’ll give you an example of myself.  When I started my business I had good revenue months and bad revenue months just like most businesses.  I tended to get really comfortable when I had great revenue months, feeling like I could let off of the pedal for a bit.  Therein was the problem, I would come crashing back to Earth when I had a terrible month and hadn’t done anything to push my leads, or sales further.  The same can be said about life in general.  Life is like a roller coaster ride and is chalk full of ups and downs, however during the great times, we should continue to push ourselves to our max potential, not just settling for good.  Is this being greedy? In my opinion no, this is preparing yourself to be balanced.  The reason? Fluctuations of thought process like being too “relaxed” or “stressed” can cause more disturbances in your life than anything else, because often when things are “good” we forget to think about what happens just in case things go wrong and we may be come obsessive in the wrong ways.  Proper balance mentally can help you accomplish more because you will always be focused on the future while enjoying the present.

monkeys smelling roses

There are many techniques to achieving balance between a positive state of mind and negative state of mind.   Some of these include talking a break from your work and “smelling the roses”.  You have to take some time out to enjoy the things you’ve accomplished and to reflect on what got you to this place in your life.  You shouldn’t get stuck here however, you should take an appropriate amount of time and then move on.  Whatever the appropriate amount of time is varies from person to person, but once you’ve taken in your moment….keep it moving.

flat tire

Another way to achieve mental balance is to have a proper view when bad things happen.  If you get a flat tire on the way to an important meeting that you’ve been preparing for, for months because you rolled over a nail, recognizing that the situation couldn’t be helped will help you to have a realistic view of it.  Don’t allow the flat tire to cause you to have a bad attitude, instead try to focus on something positive.

get over it

If you do have a terrible day that you just can’t shake and you feel yourself spiraling, allow yourself a 24 hour period to be upset and then move on.  Don’t let problems fester and take control of your world.  Lingering negativity can cause you to become distracted and be inefficient.  More importantly if you linger on negative thoughts then you are probably not engaging in the daily activities that will help you achieve your goals and become successful.  Successful people recognize negative things happen and send their time resolving to fix the problems around it.

Successful people tend to focus on creating and reinventing themselves frequently.  This doesn’t mean you have to be artistic, it simply means that you should constantly be looking for ways to better yourself and push yourself to be the best version of yourself that you can be.  Typically people who struggle in life do the same things every day, in the same way.  It takes more strength to learn something new, or take a job that you always wanted, or to do something out of the box.  When you get comfortable you may find that you’ve stopped challenging yourself and you feel stale.  You may start to feel like something is missing.  Success is a constant and ever evolving state that requires innovation and conceptualization.  Try to reinvent yourself as often as you see if, but in positive ways that enhance your skill set.

Be realistic and honest with yourself and continue to work on yourself.  Never let yourself get too comfortable with where you are.  Continue to balance hardwork and positive thinking so you can advance yourself.  If you EVER have a bad day, just think about a T-Rex trying to make a bed and relax….

Everything Matters

If you believe in the principle of cause and effect, then you believe that essentially everything we do in our life matters.  That’s an important idea to wrap our heads around since we have to make decisions everyday that could affect other people or aspects of our lives in the future.  When trying to plan for reaching a goal and working towards improving our lives, we have to take into consideration everything we do as a contributor to our future.  Who we spend time with, how we speak, how we spend our time, what we learn, read or even how we think.  At the foundation of success is the very simple principle that everything that we do everyday will have an effect on what happens in the future.  Some people call this the “butterfly effect”, but really we need to think of it as creating a series of habits that ultimately lead us the in the direction we wish to go to achieve our goals.  If you want to change your life then everything you do has to center around how you want to change your life.  Want to improve on your relationships with other people? Then you have to create good habits that draw other people to you, like being welcoming, hospitable and friendly.  This doesn’t come naturally to everyone, I know of many people who accidentally give off the impression that they don’t want to be bothered, just by their facial expressions.  The key is once we are aware that we are doing something contrary to our goals, then we have to work on changing the behaviors that can set our progress back.  Think of it this way, we have to constantly audit our daily behaviors to see if our daily habits are promoting our goals or working against them.

One of the most major symptoms of bad habits are we are in the same place doing the same thing that we were doing previously after a period of 6 months or a year.  We have to constantly reinvent ourselves and adapt our habits to fit the progression we’ve made in our lives in achieving our goals.  Here are some other symptoms of bad habits:

  1. Decreases in Work Production – Bad habits can affect our work production and our output.  Have you noticed a decrease in your workload?  Then perhaps you have recently developed some bad habits you need to get rid of
  2. Time Management Suffers – Have you started being late for events, work or other activities?  Another key sign that we are creating bad habits is that we begin to lose track of time and our ability to manage our time suffers and we are either late or we procrastinate
  3. Procrastination- Bad habits can lead to us pushing off things to another time or day.  Procrastination is a key that we are not planning our time out and that we are working like a ship without navigation
  4. Loss of Motivation – There’s no doubt about it, if we create bad habits then we will find ourselves losing interest in the things that we once wanted to accomplish.  We will no longer be motivated to make the changes and progress towards the goals that we once held in high esteem.  We will slowly lose our grip on what and who we want to become.  Loss of motivation is another major symptom that we are engaging in bad habits

The antidote to bad habits is changing how we do business.  We have to have the presence of mind to recognize the symptoms that we are working with bad habits from the list I’ve given you above and work to correct those tendencies.  Here are some helpful ways that you can change your habits to work for you.

  1. Start Early- Get yourself up out of bed early and create a list of things you need to do for the day and settle your mind before the day starts getting busy and crowded with non-essentials
  2. Keep a priorities list- No matter what your goals are: health, success, entrepreneurship or family goals, you need to keep a priorities list that you can reflect on during your early morning wake up so you can keep those things top of mind
  3. Do something everyday-  If you have read my blogs before, then you’ve read that I am a big advocate of working on at least one thing everyday that will shape your success and your future.  We alone have the power to affect our future and we should use every single day to work on how we want to see the next 5, 10, 15 years of our life shape up\
  4. Get expert advice- There are plenty of blogs, books, websites and materials that can motivate you to create good habits.  I’ll have some recommendations in the Lifestyle Recommendations page
  5. Take Imperfect Action-  I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again.  You don’t have to be perfect to start changing something, in this case your habits don’t have to be perfect, you just have to start today.  Pick one of these suggestions and get started today.  Even if you only spend 5 minutes making your priorities list don’t wait for tomorrow or another day

Here’s to your success,

The difference between you and everyone else

Perhaps you’ve heard the expression “dare to be different”.  Why does that premise of daring to be different actually matter, and what does it mean?  The world is made up of individuals with different passions, abilities, dreams, beliefs and views on life.  Being different in this world sometimes comes with being bullied or other hateful actions, but being different is what creates success in people.  Most said that some of the world’s foremost authorities and geniuses of our time were crazy, but when they created something that changed the world their differences were embraced by the world.  I’m not saying that you have to create the next iphone, unless you want to, but what i’m saying is that success always starts with being different.  You have to accept your difference and be willing to work towards your vision to succeed.  The reality is that most people in the world will never accomplish their dreams, or even try to do dare to be different because they are more concerned with how others view them.  Being a visionary or accomplishing a life goal is about having a plan yes, but at some point you have to break away from the pack and stick firmly to your goals in order to achieve them.  It may require you to break from your “normal” routine or your “normal” though process, but you have to be invested in creating a new “normal” if you want to be successful

Creating your new normal is as hard as it sounds.  It simply requires that you break away from the habits and thought processes that don’t relate to your goal.  The hard part of your creating your new normal is the implementation of the new changes you’ve created in your mind.  If only a small percentage of people are successful, then you have to model your mind and life around creating methods that will work for you goals.  We can’t simply do the same things every day and expect things to just change for us, i’m sure you are already familiar with the definition of insanity.  So here’s where the rubber meets the road.  In order to be different in the sense that you are prepping yourself to break away from the pack you have to do 5 things:

  1. Be willing to commit to your change
  2. Take imperfect action
  3. Align yourself with like minded people
  4. Change your environment to fit your new goal
  5. Don’t be sensitive! Be willing to take criticism.  Learn from it, embrace the haters!

The world was built from individuals who were willing to change themselves first, before they changed the world.  You have the power inside of you to be whatever you want to be, don’t let anyone or anything stop you from accomplishing your goals.  Different isn’t bad, different is simply a change from the norm.

The answer is that there is no difference between you and everyone else.  We are all the same and you are just like everyone else who doesn’t accomplish their goals and will never step out of the box to do anything.  How do you feel hearing that?  If it doesn’t tick you off then something is wrong.  I saw a quote the other day and perhaps you’ve read it too, “Next year you will wonder why you didn’t start today”.  You may be perfectly fine not accomplishing your goals or being in the same place next year that you are today and if so, don’t change anything.  However if you want more, if you want to start creating the life that you want, you have to start with identifying who “everyone” is around you.  The most amazing thing happens when you start to change yourself and work towards your goals.  You either attract people who have always wanted to change their lives and accomplish their goals or you create haters who hate seeing you progress and separate themselves from you.  Indeed you will draw people to you that are positive minded simply by making the changes in your life required to creating your life plan.  If the worst thing that could be said about you is that you do things differently than most, then you are probably on the right track to success.  Is there a straight line to success? No, I don’t believe there is, because like in my last post I talk about the only way to succeed is to fail.  Your road to success will include some ups and downs but at the end of the day you should take pride in your journey to being the best version of yourself that you can be.

Be true to yourself and your vision for your life and don’t even let your own negative thoughts sidetrack you from doing what you need to do.  You have to be your best advocate when it comes to achieving the life you want.  Create your reality and your success and dare to be different.

Is being obsessed with success helpful or harmful?

Every where you look you will find a “get rich quick” scheme or a “lose 40 pounds in three weeks” ad.  This raises an interesting question.  Is being obsessed with success helpful or harmful? While it’s true that there is no substitute for hard work, being completely consumed with being successful might be more of a trap and cause a person to become shortsighted and more prone to give up on their goals.  Most people would applaud the attributes that are required to make a person successful and so do I, however, I do think there is something to be said for people who take time to reassess their plan and stop and smell the roses along the way.  I’m sure the people who are reading this who know me may find it hypocritical that i’m talking about stopping and smelling the roses since my personal creed is “work as hard as you can, as long as you can”.  I must admit however that when I have taken breaks to go see a movie or to round out myself with a hobby it has provided me with much more concentration on working towards my goals.  So how can you balance your aggressive desire to be the best with living life?  I’ll tell you below.

  1. Create a physical outlet for yourself: There is nothing better for our concentration than engaging in physical activity.  Physical activity has been proven to have an affect on brain function, causing the person who is exercising to be able to focus better and even improve memory.  We are all guilty at one point or another in our life of piling our plates so high that things fall off, we start to forget things and it makes us less productive.  Having a physical outlet changes the game, allowing us to work off mental stress that can bog down our thoughts.
  2. Detach from electronics: Every week you should have at least one or two days without using your phone.  The cell phone can be a constant reminder of what we have to do and when we have to do it.  The cell phone also has a way of keeping our minds captive with what we are missing and who is trying to get in touch with us.  When we detach ourselves even if only for a few hours our stress level will plummet and you will feel present in the moment.
  3. Have work friends and social friends: Some times you just don’t always want to talk shop, but the more we spend time around people we also work with, the more likely we are going to talk about office politics and who said what to stab who in the back.   It is nice to be able to spend time with people who have absolutely no connection to what we do at work because then you can talk about other interest you have in a more well rounded way.  With that haven been said, it is also important to have work friends because those friends can help sympathize with you when something goes wrong at work and you create a nice community around your work, the place where most Americans spend their time.
  4. Get a hobby: One of the best ways to relax and take your mind off of the stresses of work is to find a hobby.  I’ve personally recently taken up archery.  This hobby is great because it will take a long time to get good.  Heck it might take me a long time to get the arrow on the target stand.  I think the key to a good hobby is to find one that your interested in, but your not necessarily good at because this will allow you to grow into the hobby over time.
  5. Purge Negative Influences: There is nothing that can bog down someone mentally more than negative influences in our lives.  Whether it is people, experiences or environments, break free from these influences that can keep you feeling trapped and unable to achieve balance in your life.  You only have one shot at living the life you want to live and why waste it around people and environments that suppress your goals and plans. “When you stay focused and keep a commitment you create momentum, and momentum creates momentum.” – Rich Fettke
There’s no doubt that creating a focus on your goals and plans in your life that is laser like, can help you build momentum towards your goals.  You may see some people in your life who you consider successful who just seem to always get the breaks or always find the opportunities.  They may call it being obsessed with success but what it really is, is that they maintain their focus and always are prepared when opportunities come around.  Obsession can cause you to miss opportunities because you may lose your ability to remain adaptable to the world around you, thus losing your ability to change as the world changes.  In the end obsession can make you miss the mark and make you intolerable to be around.  So is obsession helpful or harmful?  Think about your life, think about how you view your work and social life.  The answer can always be found in what your view is about success and life.  Focus is different from obsession, focus is like an unstoppable train progressing towards the end destination.  Obsession is like an airplane without a pilot, you can fly high, you have power, but ultimately no direction and when things go wrong, watch out!  Stay positive, focused and achieve balance in your life and you will accomplish more than you thought you ever could.
